Using "Electrical Noise" as a trigger for home automation

Posted September 14, 2007 by Nora

NewScientistTech has an intriguing article about research into using electrical noise (noise made by household appliances as they are switched on and off) instead of cameras, microphones, or sensors to automate smart homes.

The new method relies on a device plugged into a single standard wall socket that monitors noise in the electrical supply caused by electrical devices being switched on and off. A computer monitoring the device can then infer that a person must be in that location.

Life|ware Preview video available for dealers

Posted September 13, 2007 by Pete

The sweet Life|ware Preview video that introduces you to Life|ware and is found on the front page of www.life-ware.com is now available for Life|ware Certified dealers to use in their own marketing efforts.

To download the video, log in to your www.lifewareuniversity.com account. The video is on the home page and in the Library.

Internally, we we’re calling this piece “the fly-by,” which always reminded me of how Maverick in Top Gun would always request permission for a fly-by, be denied said permission, then perform a fly-by anyway. I mean, why did he always ask permission when he knew it would be denied? Was he trying to be more maverick about it? Why not just do the dang fly-by and drop the theatrics?

Anyway, the boss here has told me I have to refer to the video as the “Life|ware preview,” which raises absolutely no Top Gun comparisons in my mind at all. For what that’s worth.

Go download it. It rocks, Maverick or not.
